My favorite read-aloud for the kids so far this year has been Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard & Florence Atwater. It just tickled my imagination to think of turning my basement into a refrigerator to keep a dozen pet penguins happy. So I've enjoyed watching the kids take a heightened interest in penguins now that we finally got some snow. K and V have been outside making penguin burrows and nests for penguin eggs. (Each nest even has an extra entrance for a fire escape - think that will fulfill our requirements for teaching fire safety, Rachel?) My favorite thing to watch, though is K sliding down the backyard hills penguin-style. She gets off to a running start, dives to the snow, keeps her legs and arms up, and even leans and kicks in order to turn and control her speed. She actually has more control doing this than sledding in a sled. I finally got my camera out there to grab a couple of pictures of her penguin-style sliding.
